    Q:
How to remove the rack and pinion power steering gear on Toyota Matrix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The starting step to remove the rack and pinion power steering rack and pinion requires application of power steering fluid or molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease to the specified parts. Start the inspection process by disconnecting the battery negative terminal while checking the front wheel position at the center of the car. Begin by removing the steering pad together with the steering wheel assembly then proceed to take off the front wheels after removing both engine under covers from left and right side. The LH tie rod end sub-assembly requires removal of the cotter pin followed by nut then application of Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to detach it from the steering knuckle. Use the same methodology to disconnect the tie rod end sub-assembly of the right-hand side. The second step requires removal of the column hole cover silencer sheet followed by disconnection of the steering intermediate shaft. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-38401 to disconnect the pressure feed tube while following with the return tube sub-assembly removal which requires deletion of the bolt and tube clamp. Separate both front stabilizer link assemblies then detach the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 1 from both lower ball joints (LH and RH). Install two engine hangers on the assembly before securing them with bolts that get torqued to 38 Nm. The engine chain hoist should connect to these hangers without touching other parts while the assembly hangs in the air. Unbolt the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly from its connections to the engine mounting insulator FR and frame and engine mounting insulator RR on the crossmember. A transmission jack must support the crossmember before removal of the 4 bolts allows technicians to extract both the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly with its attached steering rack and pinion assembly. Unfasten sub-assembly No. 1 of the steering column hole cover followed by marking critical points between the intermediate shaft and control valve before unbolting the steering intermediate shaft but retaining the rack & pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly through four crossmember bolts.
