The first step to remove the 1NZ-FE engine exhaust pipe involves disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable. Work on Sedan models starts with removing the instrument panel finish panel lower center and the instrument panel finish panel end LH. The first step requires removal of the manual transmit shift lever knob sub-assembly together with the shifting hole cover sub-assembly for Hatchback manual transmit vehicles. Next step is to take out the upper console panel sub-assembly for Sedan vehicles and follow it up with removing the console box rear cover for Hatchback and ending with the console upper rear panel sub-assembly for Sedan. Next in the procedure remove both the console box carpet and the rear console box assembly. The Sedan requires removal of the instrument pad lower LH before proceeding to eliminate the heated oxygen sensor. The detachment of the exhaust pipe assembly front requires you to first remove four bolts and four compression springs and then take out exhaust pipe support No. 4 and the exhaust front pipe assembly and its accompanying 2 exhaust pipe gaskets. Remove both No. 4 exhaust pipe supports and the exhaust tail pipe assembly from Hatchback models or the three No. 4 supports and tail pipe assembly from Sedan models during the exhaust pipe assembly tail removal process.

Start with the tail section by securing the 2 No. 4 exhaust pipe supports for the Hatchback or 3 No. 4 exhaust pipe supports for the Sedan, ensuring they are properly positioned on the pipe retaining support.

Measure the free length of the compression spring using vernier calipers; the minimum length should be 40.5 mm (1.594 in.) for the front side and 38.5 mm (1.516 in.) for the rear side.

Use a plastic hammer and wooden block to tap in a new exhaust pipe gasket until flush with the exhaust manifold.

For the Hatchback, remove the 2 No. 4 exhaust pipe supports and the exhaust tail pipe assembly.
