The process of VIN registration into a new Engine Control Module (ECM) requires the entry of the 17-digit alphanumeric VIN through a hand-held tester device. The registration process demands users to follow input instructions before reading then writing the VIN. The VIN registration requires users to press the UP, DOWN, RIGHT and LEFT buttons together with buttons from 0 to 9 to complete the input. Navigate the tester screen with RIGHT and LEFT buttons to reach specific alphabetical characters while using UP or DOWN to choose them and entering numbers becomes possible by pressing numerical buttons. You can locate the cursor over a wrong character before selecting the proper one by using either the UP/DOWN key buttons or their numerical equivalents. Check that the entered VIN matches the actual VIN of the vehicle before pressing ENTER to finish. Read the VIN information through the hand-held tester and use this device to also program the VIN sequentially.

The ECM reprogramming function is available only with authentic Toyota factory scantool software, which runs on the mentioned scantools, and software version requirements are specified in applicable Technical Service Bulletin/Service Communication documents.
