The first step to swap out an Engine Control Module (ECM) for 2AZ-FE engine control systems starts by disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable then waiting at least 90 seconds to stop Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. Start by removing the air cleaner cap followed by taking out the air cleaner case through harness clamp removal and unfastening its 3 securing bolts. Begin ECM removal by taking out 3 bolts connecting the ECM bracket until the ECM can be extracted, then disconnect both ECM connectors while keeping foreign material away from the connector terminals by pushing the locks on the levers. The procedure ends by extracting the ECM with bracket and its accompanying 4 screws and 2 brackets.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

Reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal and perform registration by inputting the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the replacement ECM and executing the vehicle stability control system recognition.

Install the ECM with 3 bolts, applying a torque of 6.5 Nm (66 kgf-cm, 57 in-lbf).
