Toyota FJ Cruiser Starter delivers the first mechanical force to crank the engine and transforms battery power into rotation to propel the crankshaft. The Starter in its housing spins around field coils or permanent magnets. As the solenoid externally mounted is energized via the ignition circuit, the drive pinion is moved into the flywheel ring gear. The solenoid is connected to the battery by heavy gauge wiring, with the control components (Starter relay and a neutral or clutch safety switch) such that they will only engage when the Toyota FJ Cruiser transmission is in a safe gear position. The FJ Cruiser has two functional styles, a conventional direct drive design and a gear reduction Starter which uses internal gearing to multiply torque. In each style, the Toyota mechanism is based on the same solenoid mechanism to propel the Starter drive gear forward. As the engine catches fire, an overrunning clutch is released to avoid damaging it and to avoid jerking the FJ Cruiser.

Toyota FJ Cruiser Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Starter on Toyota FJ Cruiser?
    A:
The Starter requires removal by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal first. The technician starts by removing the No. 2 engine under cover assembly through the disconnection of 4 bolts. The third step involves removing the No. 2 exhaust manifold stay after unscrewing its 3 bolts. You should then disconnect the wire harness by removing the bolt while you separate the earth wire harness from the cylinder block. The starter assembly can be removed after disconnecting terminal 50 connector and unfastening the nut at wire harness terminal 30 followed by unscrewing the 2 bolts to free the starter assembly from its position.
