The first step to replace the trunk/liftgate shock/support involves unbolt and removing the back door stay from both back door panel and body while supporting the door manually. The customer should drill a 2.0 - 3.0 mm (0.079 - 0.118 in.) hole in the bottom of the back door stay for high-pressure gas release before disposal by drilling carefully to prevent flying chips. Handle the back door stay with caution because the gas is both odorless and colorless and non-toxic and make sure not to scrape or scratch the piston rod part that is exposed or let paint or oil touch it and never extend the cylinder and piston rod with the back door stay fully out. Secure the new back door stay to the body by using two bolts that require 8.3 N.m (85 kgf.cm, 74 in.lbf) torque before connecting it to the back door panel through the bolt and back door stay with 26 N.m (270 kgf.cm, 20 ft.lbf) torque.
