2009 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the drive shaft on 2009 Toyota Matrix?
A: A drive/propeller shaft replacement process starts by securing the propeller with its center bearing shaft assembly through tight boltings. Start by taking out Special Service Tool: : 09325-20010 from the transfer before installing the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly while avoiding damage to the oil seal or universal joint boot. Place the matchmarks of rear propeller shaft assembly and electromagnetic control coupling together before adding the 4 nuts with 4 washers for temporary installation. Install the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly through 4 bolts and 4 No. 2 center support bearing washers while using the washers a second time. The full torque for 4 nuts must reach 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf). The 6 bolts of the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly require tightening to 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft-lbf) after removing any cloth from the universal joint while holding down the brake pedal and using a 6 mm hexagon wrench. After unloading the vehicle adjust both measurements. First adjust Length A: 65.5 to 70.5 mm (2.579 to 2.776 in.) between the rear side of the cover and shaft and then adjust Length A: 11.5 to 13.5 mm (0.453 to 0.532 in.) between the center support bearing edge surface and cushion edge surface. Finally, tighten the bolts. Fully tighten the 4 bracket bolts to 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf) while maintaining a right angle between the bracket center line and shaft axial direction. Users should first stabilize the center support bearings through hand rotation of the propeller shaft before raising or lowering the differential and detached of the transfer dynamic damper. Use Special Service Tool: 09370-50010 to measure the installation angles of propeller shaft (A) and intermediate shaft (B) to verify that No. 2 joint angle (A) - (B) lies between -1.74 degrees and +0.26 degrees. The same measuring tool should be used to check the rear propeller shaft installation angle (C) and rear differential installation angle (D) with the required condition set at (C) - (D) = 1.20 degrees to 2.20 degrees. The specified installation amount requires adjustment by using a single washer of matching thickness at both sides on the No. 2 center support bearing but avoid using more than one washer on a bolt. The transfer dynamic damper should be installed last where the tightening should produce a torque of 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft-lbf).
