2007 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear Wheel Hub and Wheel Bearing on 2007 Toyota RAV4?
A: The repair and service operation for rear wheel hub and bearing involves starting with rear wheel removal followed by disconnecting the rear drive shaft assembly LH when servicing 4WD vehicles. The first step includes removing both the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH as well as the rear disc. The dial indicator shows that measurements for bearing backlash should not exceed 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) maximum and 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) maximum for 2WD but 0.06 mm (0.0024 inch) maximum for 4WD. The disc replacement or rear wheel hub repositioning will be necessary when the runout measurement surpasses the maximum value. A replacement of the hub and bearing assembly should be conducted to address enduring problems. First disconnect the negative battery cable before waiting for ninety seconds to avoid Air Bag deployment. After that remove the four-wheel-drive shaft nut using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 and strike it with a hammer to unstake it. The technician should start by removing the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH, rear disc, skid control sensor wire for 2WD, and rear speed sensor LH for 4WD, and the rear suspension No. 1 arm assembly LH, followed by disconnecting the rear shock absorber assembly LH. Uninstall the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly LH from the axle carrier by disconnecting the bolts then position it so the magnet rotor remains upward. Attach the wheel hub and bearing assembly to the axle carrier through 4 bolts while torquing them to 90 Nm (918 kgf-cm, 68 ft. lbs.). Reconnect the rear shock absorber assembly LH with 2 bolts. The procedure requires first temporarily installing the rear suspension No. 1 arm assembly LH followed by the installation of skid control sensor wire for 2WD and rear speed sensor LH for 4WD and finally the rear disc and rear brake cylinder assembly LH. The installation of a new rear wheel shaft nut requires a torque of 216 Nm (2,203 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.) followed by a chisel and hammer stake on the hub nut for 4WD systems. The last step includes installing the rear wheel while torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Then stabilize the suspension before tightening the front shock absorber assembly LH and rear suspension No. 1 arm assembly LH. Followed by inspecting the rear wheel alignment and reconnecting the cable to the negative battery terminal and checking speed sensor signal.
