2007 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable assembly on 2007 Toyota Highlander?
A: The transmission control cable assembly requires service and repair so start by cutting the cable from the negative battery terminal before proceeding. Remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly with the passenger air bag assembly, then proceed to remove the transmission control cable assembly by taking off the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnecting the control cable from the control shaft lever, removing the clip and disconnecting the control cable from the control cable bracket, disconnecting the control cable from the control cable clamp, disconnecting the cable end from the rod of the floor shift assembly, and finally removing the 2 nuts and 3 bolts to pull out the control cable from the body. Inspect the shift lever position to ensure smooth operation and correct display of the position indicator, confirming that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from N to D and rearward when shifting to R. Adjust the shift lever position by loosening the nut on the control shaft lever, pushing the control shaft fully downward, returning the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position, and while pushing the control cable end up with the shift lever in the N position, install it to the control shaft lever with the nut, ensuring a torque of 15 N m (150 kgf cm, 10 ft. lbf). The engine startup must be performed to ensure correct vehicle operation. The installation procedure begins with pulling the control cable to the body then securing the 3 bolts at 4.9 N m torque (50 kgf cm, 43 in. lbf) followed by cable end placement with the uneven surface facing up and using 11.8 N m torque (122 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf) to fasten the control cable and 2 nuts before connecting the control cable to the clamp and installing a temporary cable connection with the nut to the control shaft lever and completing the bracket installation of the control cable and clip. Reinstall the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly with the passenger air bag assembly and then reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal before conducting inspections and clearance procedures of DTC with shift lever position adjustment to check the SRS warning light.
