2005 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How can you prevent gasoline from spilling during the fuel tank removal process on 2005 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Start by removing the floor hole cover by holding the rear No. 1 seat assemblies LH and RH then taking off the tear-off floor mat before unscrewing the 3 screws and disconnecting the 2 connectors. The removal process starts with disconnecting the fuel-tank-to-filler-pipe hose from the fuel filler pipe while draining the fuel content. The fuel tank protector can be detached by setting a mission jack at its location and removing its 6 bolts. Begin by pinching the tabs of the retainer to free the lock claws prior to pulling out the 2 fuel tank tubes. Users must inspect around the quick connector for dirt before securing it with a vinyl bag. To disconnect the fuel tank breather tube pinch retainer tab then remove it while disconnecting the fuel tank vent hose requires pushing the connector deep inside, pinching portion A and drawing the connector out. A mission jack must be positioned on the fuel tank to detach the assembly through removal of its two bolts and two fuel tank bands along with the fuel tank itself. Start the process by removing the two fuel tubes joint clips from the fuel tank cushion which leads to tube extraction. Complete the procedure by cleaning the region surrounding the quick connector. Special Service Tool: 09808-14020 (09808-01410, 09808-01420, 09808-01430) should be used to loosen the retainer before pulling out the assembly so that the gasket can be extracted from the fuel tank. Pull out the fuel tank breather tube sub-assembly after pinching the tab of the retainer and then remove the fuel tank inlet hose from its position on the fuel tank. Fit a new fuel tank filler pipe hose which should have a tight and secure attachment. The fuel tank breather tube sub-assembly should be installed by pushing tube connector onto pipe until it clicks and installing retainer followed by a damage and foreign objects check. The installation process for the fuel suction tube assembly includes using a new gasket while checking for any fuel sender gauge arm bends and tightening it with a Special Service Tool to match the retainer mark with the fuel tank's screw-thread starting point. The fuel tank main tube must be connected with the tube joint clip while checking for scratches or foreign objects and the installation of three new fuel tank cushions. You must secure the fuel tank assembly by installing a mission jack to it and adding the 2 bolts and 2 fuel tank bands while tightening them to 40 Nm (408 kgf.cm, 30 ft.lbf). Connect securely the fuel tank breather tube sub-assembly to the fuel tank main tube and return tube. The completion steps include fuel tank protector sub-assembly No. 1 installation with 6 bolts to 20 Nm (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) torque value followed by connecting the fuel tank to filler pipe hose, ending with a fuel leak check.
