2005 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY FRONT LH on 2005 Scion tC?
A: The first step to change the LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY FRONT LH requires a front vehicle lift followed by a vertical loose check of front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 by raising and lowering movements which should use a wooden block wrapped in fabric to avoid damage to bolt and nuts. Start by removing the front wheel followed by the removal of the front axle hub LH nut using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010. Use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to disconnect the speed sensor front LH along with the tie rod end sub-assembly LH before separating the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH. Separate the front axle assembly LH and the lower ball joint assembly front LH after removing their associated cotter pin and castle nuts followed by installation of Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to complete the detachment. To inspect the front LH lower ball joint assembly place it in a vise before installing the stud bolt nut and performing five or more stud bolt flips followed by measuring turning torque with a torque wrench while comparing the result to the maximum limit of 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). The lower ball joint assembly requires replacement with a new one when the torque measurements exceed the specified range or when dust boots show cracks or grease leakage. The lower ball joint assembly front LH gets installed on the steering knuckle by using the castle nut to thread onto the steering knuckle provided that the thread and taper area remains without oil contamination and torques to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) while the nut needs a 60° additional tightening if the cotter pin holes are not aligned. Begin by installing a new cotter pin to the steering knuckle and continue installation with the front axle assembly LH and front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH, tie rod end sub-assembly LH, speed sensor front LH and front axle hub LH nut. Install the front wheel followed by torqueing at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The front wheel alignment requires inspection and adjustment following the installation while checking the ABS speed sensor signal.
