- Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump in a Hybrid System on 2001 Toyota Prius?A: The maintenance process for the Hybrid System Coolant Pump begins by emptying the engine coolant followed by engine under cover RH removal alongside drive belt and water pump detachment. The service of the Hybrid System Coolant Pump begins by using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00600) to remove three bolts and a pump pulley. Next, remove three bolts together with two nuts, the water pump and gasket. The water pump must be inspected to check for coolant leakage at the drain hole; if any leak exists the water pump needs replacement. To check the water pump bearing operation the pulley needs to be manually adjusted while inspecting the noise levels of the bearing system. A bearing replacement should be performed if necessary. Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00600) to fix the 3 bolts which enable proper installation of the pump pulley after tightening the bolts to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). The procedure requires belt installation followed by coolant addition before starting the engine to examine for leaks and then measuring the engine coolant level for reinstalling the engine under cover RH.
