- Q: How to service and repair the drive shaft on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?A: The first step for drive/propeller shaft maintenance requires the removal of the propeller shaft and the application of matchmarks on both the differential flange and propeller shaft followed by nut, bolt and washer removal with 74 Nm (750 kgf-cm, 54 ft. lbs.) torque. Proceed by pulling the transmission yoke followed by inserting Tool: 09325-20010 into the transmission to stop oil from leaking. The service procedure includes inspecting propeller shafts and intermediate shafts with a dial indicator for maximum runout amounts which must stay below 0.8 mm (0.031 inch). If runout exceeds this level, replace the affected shaft. During inspection check the spider bearings but avoid tight vise gripping of the propeller shaft tube to prevent deformation. The measurement of spider bearing axial play must be done by turning the yoke while keeping firm pressure on the shaft until it reaches 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); replace the spider bearing if this limit is exceeded. The installation steps should be executed in the direct opposite sequence to removal steps.
