2000 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a thermostat on 2000 Toyota Corolla?
A: The service procedure for the thermostat begins by draining engine coolant followed by drive belt and generator removal. Service technicians should disconnect the ECT switch connector then remove two nuts to take the water inlet off the cylinder block before uninstalling both the thermostat and its gasket. You should inspect the thermostat by placing it in water while heating it from cold to check the valve opening temperature ranges between 74.0 - 78.5 degrees Celsius (165 - 173 degrees Fahrenheit); replace the thermostat if the readings show incorrect results. The thermostat requires replacement whenever its valve opening specifications fail to reach 10 mm (0.39 inch) lift at 90 degrees Celsius (194 degrees Fahrenheit) and the valve must stay completely closed below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Install a new gasket on the thermostat before positioning it upward with the jiggle valve pointing at 10 degrees from its designated position. Secure the water inlet to its place using two nuts and torques them to 9 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Afterwards reinstall the generator and drive belt. Stop the procedure by filling the engine with coolant while you simultaneously start the engine to perform a leak test.
